Dumbing Down 1
They say the BBC is dumbing down and frankly I have to agree. A lot of output seems to be addressed to the lowest common denominator.
On 26th December, for the whole day, the headline, online BBC News was the death of George Michael. Look, I have nothing against George Michael I really like his music, let me add my tribute, 'he sang some memorable songs' but is his death of sufficient gravitas to take up the headline banner for a whole day? Has nothing else newsworthy happened anywhere in the world that his death takes prime position?
To quote someone much more clever than me when writing about the plethora of celebrity deaths in 2016, 'Every new death.....was treated as a biblical judgement on some unspecified moral failure by our online moronocracy with its collective reading age of 12.....there is nothing especially tragic or meaningful about the cavalcade of celebrity mortality...because they live as long as you would expect them to live if you do drugs and smoke fags, drink or are overweight for most of you life.'
Amen to that.
And if you want an example of what I mean by lowest common denominator:
A young woman recently wrote, 'my sister's pregnant. Can't wait to find out if I'm gonna be an auntie or an uncle.'
